Thank you letter

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

From the Junior Activity Chairperson

As the training season has officially closed for most of the Juniors I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, carers and supporters who made this year a great success.    There have been many people who have worked hard to ensure our Juniors enjoyed the experience of Surf Lifesaving this season. This included  those who managed each of the age groups, ensured water safety was in place at Sunday training and at carnivals, set up the arenas for each training session, transported surf craft to carnivals, managed our memberships and carnival nominations, managed our club clothing supplies and our canteen. Not to mention all those involved in running our own Ellis Beach Carnival. Thank you all very much for your contributions.

As I advised at our last Sunday training the next formal gathering will be the Junior Break Up / Presentation Day on the Sat 8 Nov commencing at 3.00 pm at our club house. Please see attached flyer.

Prior to the presentation of awards the Ellis Beach SLSC Junior Activities Committee will convene. It is at this forum that the Junior Committee for next season is elected.

We would very much welcome new parents joining the committee. You do not have to have surf life saving experience just the enthusiasm to give it a go.   “Many hands make light work’ and there will always be support available from experienced club members. Please see attached list of roles on the committee.  Please feel free to contact me (preferably prior to 8/11/08) if you would like to nominate for a position or for more information.

Finally I would finally like to take the opportunity to thank the current Junior Committee for their time, effort and enthusiasm this season.

Regards,

Gary Williams

Good Luck Message

Gooday Ellis Beach Juniors,

unfortuantley I am at work and will not be attending this carnival, so for all you fantastic kids that are competing this weekend, try your hardest, compete fairly and have some fun while your doing it.

I think the plan is for Brad Eaton to be Team Manager on Saturday, and John Raymond             on Sunday.

Oh yeah, bring home the bacon for Ellis Beach Juniors.

Mission Beach Carnival

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Congratulations Ellis Beach Juniors on winning the first NQ Branch Carnival of 2008, with Mission Beach turning on perfect weather (although it absolutely pelted down Sunday night and was still raining when we left on Monday).

Whilst Ellis Beach ended up winning Juniors, seniors and the overall carnival, there was very little in the points between us and 2nd place. It was very apparent looking at other club numbers that we are certainly going to have to work for our victories this year, especially in some team events such as Board Rescue and beach relays.

As most of you know I cover a few miles during these carnivals and try to watch all age groups with a view of identifying some outstanding performances. My standouts for the weekend include our first timers the under 8’s under the guidance of Ash, the whole under 11 team for their outstanding results at their first 2 day carnival, under 14’s for their first carnival on the long boards again with some great results and don’t forget little Jayden Scott for being Under 8 runner up at flags (although he tried to convince me that he had won it).

Whilst the image of Emma & Darcy (especially Darcy’s victory salute) winning the U11 board rescue will stay with me for a long time, this week I have chosen Sebastian Koch for the Junior Team Manager award. Watching Seb compete in his swims, beach relay’s just to name a few with his boyish beaming grin and never give up attitude reminded me of just what sport is supposed to be about and for that Seb I thank you. (Seb just see Marcia at next weeks training and she will hand over some chips or an ice cream, your choice).

As for some of the not so desirable ‘tactics’ by some other clubs, please pass on to your kids to just ignore these last ditched efforts by those who need help to win. Their tactics are not for Ellis Beach kids and if you are on the receiving end of any deliberate foul play please pass on to your Age Manager. Lets not forget though that surf can sometimes be a little bit of ruff & tumble so we need to prepare our kids for it and not make them too soft & sooky.

So for all our first timers I hope you had a good weekend and now have a bit of an idea what a surf carnival is all about. Port Douglas is next which is usually a great weekend and traditionally they have some pretty cool age awards for the kids, so fire up your kids.

I am back to work now and will miss the next 2 carnivals so good luck to all competitors at Port Douglas and lets keep our record of Junior Carnival wins rolling.

Regards

Grant

A message from the Junior Team Manager

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Firstly to all our new kids and their families let me say welcome to the premier club of Queensland. To all those families that are returning, welcome back for another Surf Sports season.

With the Mission Beach carnival being the first of the season I thought it timely to advise and remind parents and carers of some important carnival issues.

Water Safety
Trained lifesavers give up their time to assist in the role of water safety. Parents please know that if your child is removed from the water by water safety it is for the child’s own safety. The decision to remove a child from the event is not taken lightly and the child is usually given even chance to complete their race, but sometimes it may be a little too much especially for new competitors. The removal of your child does not constitute them as a failure and it is imperative that when your child returns to the beach (usually by a really cool boat ride) they are given nothing but support with a view of then training harder to achieve their goals.

Photographing Children
For the protection of our children SLQS & NQ Branch only permits SLSQ endorsed photographers to photograph children within the competition arena. This also includes people standing outside the competition area and shooting photos over the netting.

Competition area
The competition arena is usually defined by orange netting. For the safety of competitors, assisting Officials and to generally reduce congestion only Officials, Competitors, Age & Team Managers are permitted within the Competition arena. Please be patient with officials at the end of some events (especially Surf Team events) the final tallying of team points can take some time. Age Managers can assist you in getting clothes, towels etc to your children.

Carnival Times
Saturday Under 11 and up, start time is 1200.
Sunday Under 8 and up, start time is 0800.
As with all other sports it is beneficial to both your child and the club if you can arrive earlier.

Age Managers
Age Managers are there to assist you and your children and they should be your first point of contact with any of your queries. With Saturday being team events, Age Managers can get extremely busy, please assist them by ensuring your children stay close to the team tents and are ready to compete when they are called. Like most Surf Clubs the Age Manager is generally an under estimated and thankless job, please take the time to introduce yourself to them and don’t forget to shout them a cold soothing drink at the end of the day.

Disputes
With NQ Carnivals being held in idyllic locations and attended by great people there is generally not too problems on the sand. However sport being sport sometimes bring out the worst in some, so should there be any disputes involving an Official, another Club, parent etc please refrain from getting involved and locate either myself or an Age Manager. The abuse of Officials is not tolerated by NQ Branch with both offender and their club possibly facing disciplinary actions.

Club Tents
Ellis Beach has 4 sun shades provide for the junior program. These tents are provided to assist in getting the kids out of the sun whilst they are waiting to compete and they also act as a central point for all club members. Please be mindful of others when setting up your territory, they can get quiet loud and busy.

Fluids & Food
These carnivals can get extremely busy and you may not see your kids for extended periods. Please take every opportunity to get fluids into them prior & after events. Because there is so much going on kids will sometimes avoid eating, every chance you get try and get small amounts of good energy food into them. Whilst I don’t want to act as your parent please hold off on the Chips , Burgers, heavy foods etc until your child has finished all their events.

Club Gear - Setting up / Packing Up
For those that don’t have their own equipment the club does provide limited boards, tents, tubes etc. Any assistance in setting up tents at the start and transport gear back to the trailer area at the end of the carnival is always greatly appreciated.

In closing Mission Beach is usually a very nice weekend away, one thing that can usually be banked on is the weather. It can get quite windy and cold so ensure you have plenty of winter woollies for the whole family.

So good luck to all those fantastic kids competing, and parents have an enjoyable weekend away. As with the Age Managers I am there to assist in making the carnival an enjoyable experience so please feel free to grab me if you have any problems.
